Development company Mainstream Renewable Power has received environmental approval for a 264MW Cerro Tigre windfarm near the town of Antofagasta, Chile.
The project involves an investment of nearly $630m and has been approved by the Service of Environmental Assessment.
It will comprise 80 turbines over 1,131ha and will be connected to the northern grid of the South American country.
Mainstream Renewable Power’s chief executive officer Bart Doyle said: "This work will contribute to the development of a diversified, clean, and reliable energy mix, which will provide an efficient solution to the country and the people of this region.
"We are a company that develops its own projects and we are always looking for new opportunities for solar and wind energy developments. The region of Antofagasta has important attributes that enable this."
Later this year, the company intends to commence construction of another two facilities in Chile, which will generate a combined capacity of 300MW.
