Nature Power, a consultancy specialising in green power has received funding of $124,798.50 (£100,000) from Innovative UK to help the company develop its pilot project on “Combining complex and disparate data sources to define and deploy leaner and smarter operational strategies to improve the performance of wind farms.”
The project is set to begin on 1 October 2019, and the company will collaborate with the Science and Technology Facility Council as part of the project, benefiting from its science expertise.

By GlobalDataNatural Power technical director Leanne Ramage said: “The outputs from this project will put Natural Power at the forefront of wind turbine analysis services, but will also significantly extend the range of maintenance planning and delivery offered by our site management teams. The increase in capacity will enable us to offer turbine management that is leaner and smarter, contributing to the key drivers of increasing efficiency, availability and turbine lifetime while reducing overall operating costs.”
While products exist to enhance turbine performance via analytics, Nature Power primarily focuses on one particular feature of turbines, for example CMS data for turbine component health checks.
“This project will develop a model that takes account of the full range of data available – from handwritten anecdotes to high-resolution SCADA data, and capitalises on our wealth of hands-on experience of the practical management and servicing of wind turbines,” Ramage adds.
“There are many levers that can be used to increase the output of wind farms, looking at ways of reducing downtime, maximising production and extending the life of the turbines are all essential areas to explore when utilising the data which is produced both by the turbines and the site management process. With the ultimate aim to reduce the cost of energy”.
Natural Power provides management to approximately 30% of the UK’s windfarms and specialises in gathering and analysis of data generated from wind turbines, it is also known for the first deployment of nacelle mounted lidars.
