National Grid Renewables, a renewable energy asset developer based in the US, has revealed that its Fillmore County Solar and Louise Solar projects in southern Minnesota are now operational.

Located within the Midcontinent Independent System Operator (MISO) market, the two solar projects produce 95MW of clean energy collectively.

Fillmore and Louise were built by Berry Construction Company. During the construction phase, the two projects employed 300 workers.

US-based power utility company Xcel Energy has signed power purchase agreements (PPAs) for both the Fillmore and Louise projects, reinforcing its pledge to provide 100% carbon-free electricity by 2050.

Over their first 20 years of operation, the projects are projected to produce enough clean energy to power 497,000 homes.

They will also generate more than $30m in direct economic benefits, including $4m in new tax revenue for local townships and counties during the first 20 years of operation.

National Grid Renewables president and CEO Blake Nixon stated: “Our roots began and remain planted in Minnesota, so it’s meaningful to see these two projects come to life in our own backyard.

“We’ve partnered with Xcel Energy for over a decade, and we’re incredibly proud to be continuing our longstanding relationship with them to deliver clean, sustainable energy solutions to residents across the state of Minnesota.”

The two projects are also expected to offset over two million metric tonnes of carbon emissions during the first 20 years of operation.

Xcel Energy – Minnesota, North Dakota and South Dakota president Ryan Long stated: “As we transition our electric grid to fully carbon-free sources, we must also ensure it can meet unprecedented increases in demand from a more electrified economy, driven by the increasing prevalence of electric vehicles, data centers and more.

“The Fillmore and Louise installations bring us a step closer to that future, serving our customers both here and across the Upper Midwest with additional renewable energy.”
