Mitsubishi Power, part of Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, has secured a gas turbine supply order from Samsung C&T Corporation Saudi Arabia.

Mitsubishi Power will supply its M501JAC combined-cycle (CCGT) hydrogen-ready gas turbine for a new industrial steam and electricity co-generation plant in Saudi Arabia.

The co-generation power plant, with a capacity of 475MW, is being developed by a consortium led by the Abu Dhabi National Energy Company (TAQA) and Japanese power generation company JERA.

The facility will serve a petrochemical complex in Jubail, Eastern Province, and is owned by a special purpose entity with TAQA holding a 51% stake and JERA 49%.

The plant will supply power to the Saudi Aramco Total Refining and Petrochemical Company (SATORP) Strategic Expansion, a joint venture between Saudi Aramco and TotalEnergies.

This project is set to feature one of the Gulf region’s largest mixed-load steam crackers.

The M501JAC turbine will be the first Mitsubishi Power heavy-duty gas turbine assembled in Saudi Arabia, specifically at Mitsubishi Power Saudi Arabia’s assembly centre in Dammam.

The 17,200m² facility not only assembles turbines but also services key components.

Mitsubishi Power’s JAC gas turbine is designed to blend hydrogen with natural gas, offering the SATORP Strategic Expansion power plant operational flexibility and rapid startup times.

The turbine will contribute to a stable, low-carbon power supply, integral to Saudi Arabia’s industrial expansion and decarbonisation efforts.

Mitsubishi Power has also entered a long-term service agreement with the TAQA and JERA-led consortium, covering the provision of parts, repairs and services to ensure the continued high performance and reliability of the equipment.

Mitsubishi Power Middle East & North Africa president Khalid Salem stated: “We are proud to partner with TAQA and JERA on this landmark project which will play a pivotal role in the Kingdom’s ambition to fast track its economic growth and meet its decarbonisation goals, aligned with Saudi Vision 2030.

“Today heralds a new milestone in our journey of growth with the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

“With the provision of Mitsubishi Power’s cutting-edge CCGT [combined-cycle gas turbine] technology that will be assembled for the first time locally in the Kingdom, we are accelerating our ability to deliver clean, reliable and efficient power generation solutions that support our customers in powering the lives of communities in Saudi Arabia and across the region.”
