Mitie’s G2 Energy has been selected to design and construct Elements Green’s Staythorpe battery energy storage system (BESS) project near the Staythorpe National Grid substation, northwest of Newark-on-Trent, Nottinghamshire.
Elements Green has signed the £71.5m deal with G2 Energy to undertake the project, which can supply sufficient energy for 95,000 homes for a full day.
The project also includes a 400kV grid substation that will connect to the neighbouring National Grid Staythorpe 400kV substation by the middle of 2027.
With a planned operational life of 40 years, the project has 360MW peak power capacity and an energy storage capacity of 720 megawatt hours (MWh)
G2 Energy will act as principal designer and contractor, while Mitie will oversee the design and construction of the new 400kV grid substation.
Elements Green CEO Rasmus Friis stated: “This landmark partnership with Mitie marks a major step forward in delivering one of Europe’s largest energy storage projects. The Staythorpe battery energy storage system (BESS) will strengthen grid resilience, drive the transition to a low-carbon economy, and deliver lasting benefits to communities and businesses nationwide.
“As works begin, we are proud to be instrumental in shaping a cleaner, more secure energy landscape for the UK. At Elements Green, we are committed to accelerating investment in scalable, sustainable storage solutions — because energy storage is the backbone of a net zero future.”
The Staythorpe BESS project also promises a biodiversity net gain of at least 25.7% through 12 acres of landscaping, including the creation of woodlands and wildflower meadows with the planting of 129 trees.
The project received all necessary approvals in 2024, with on-site work beginning in February 2025
60 jobs will be created during its construction phase.
Mitie managing director for projects Mark Caskey stated: “We are proud to be playing a leading role in achieving the government’s bold clean energy goals, benefitting households and businesses across the country, while creating growth and skilled green jobs.”
“We are truly excited for work to begin alongside Elements Green at Staythorpe and to see one of the largest grid battery energy system storage projects in the country become a reality.”
