Mitsubishi Hitachi Power Systems (MHPS) and Nakoso IGCC Power have held a joint ceremony for the construction of a new coal gasification furnace, which will form the core of an integrated coal gasification combined-cycle (IGCC) plant in Iwaki, Fukushima, Japan.

The order was placed by Nakoso IGCC Power to support the revitalisation of Fukushima.

Scheduled to commence operations from September 2020, the plant will have the capacity to generate 540MW of power.

The coal gasification furnace for Nakoso IGCC Power was built at MHPS’s dedicated plant in Nagasaki, and the shipments will begin in June.

The power is generated in an IGCC system using a high-efficiency combined-cycle format integrating gas and steam turbines.

It is said that the power generation capacity is significantly higher through IGCC system and has lower carbon emission levels in comparison to traditional coal-fired plants.

Due to its dual advantages, the demand for IGCC plants is expected to grow worldwide, especially in countries that lack abundant resources such as Japan.

MHPS noted that it will continue to focus on the development of efficient power generation technologies through the efficient use of resources and protect the global environment through robust initiatives to promote the adoption of IGCC.
