The Government of India is seeking bids to achieve its target of commissioning 175GW of renewable energy (RE), 100GW of solar, and 60GW of wind power generating capacities by the year 2020.
To achieve the 100GW solar power target, the country’s Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) plans to issue a tender for 20GW of ground-mounted solar parks between 2017 and 2018.
Of the 20GW capacity, 3.6GW have already been bid out, while 3GW will be bid out in December this year. Bids for 3GW, 5GW, and 6GW capacities are expected to be sought by January, February, and March respectively next year.
Bids to develop 30GW solar capacity is expected to be sought out between 2018 and 2019, while bids for another 30GW capacity will be set between 2019 and 2020.
Of the 60GW target for wind capacity, the country has already commissioned 32GW. An additional 5GW has already been bid out and there are plans for a further 3GW to go to auction this year.
The government further intends to bid up to 2,000MW wind capacities by January and a further 2,000MW by March next year.

By GlobalDataA total of 10GW wind capacity is planned to be bid out in the next financial year and 10GW by 2019.
These auctions are expected to help India accelerate the installation of RE capacity and boost the RE manufacturing base across the country.
They are also expected to supply clean and efficient supply of power at an affordable price to consumers.
MNRE is also exploring ways to install additional RE capacity by developing floating solar power plants over dams, offshore wind energy systems, and hybrid systems, which could provide more than 10GW extra capacity.
