Iberdrola has announced the progression of its €1bn Windanker offshore wind project into its delivery phase, with all major component supply chain contracts now finalised.
Located in the German Baltic Sea, the 315MW project is set to begin fabrication work in July 2024.
This project will create more than 1,200 jobs in construction and involves collaboration with 130 suppliers from 22 countries.
The Windanker offshore wind project is a significant venture for Iberdrola, with the company investing €8.4bn in offshore wind from 2024 to 2026.
The project will be equipped with 21 next-generation turbines, each with a capacity of 15MW.
The Windanker project, fully commissioned by 2026, will support Iberdrola’s growth in offshore wind capacity from 1.8GW in 2023 to 4.8GW in 2026.

By GlobalDataAll of Windanker’s power output has been sold through long-term PPAs [power purchase agreements] to industrial and commercial customers.
It is integral to Iberdrola’s Baltic Hub, which includes the operational 350MW Wikinger wind farm and the 467MW Baltic Eagle project, set for completion in 2024.
By 2026, these projects will provide a total capacity exceeding 1.1GW, with a combined investment of €3.7bn.
Iberdrola plans to increase its capacity by 160% within three years.
Iberdrola’s offshore wind strategy includes the recently energised 496MW Saint-Brieuc project in France and the first power generation at the 804MW Vineyard Wind 1 in the US and the 476MW Baltic Eagle in Germany.
The company has also commenced construction on the East Anglia 3 offshore project in the UK – its largest wind energy project with 1.4GW capacity.
Iberdrola executive chairman Ignacio Galán stated: “This positive progress on Windanker is another pleasing milestone for Iberdrola in our most active year ever for delivering offshore wind. In 2024 we have been constructing major projects in four countries, including two now active in Germany, with billions of euros being invested to support thousands of jobs across hundreds of suppliers in dozens of countries.
“Offshore wind is a key technology for our clean energy growth in the years ahead, with all capacity from these projects secured via long-term PPA contracts or supported by government mechanisms.
“All our construction activity across the world is progressing well, and we look forward to adding Windanker to our portfolio of operational projects by the end of 2026.”
