HD Hyundai has reached an agreement with TerraPower to strengthen the global manufacturing supply chain for Natrium reactors.

The move builds a manufacturing foundation to support the commercial rollout of this nuclear technology.

Developed by TerraPower, the Natrium reactor is a fourth-generation sodium-cooled fast reactor that generates electricity by using liquid sodium to cool the heat produced from fast neutron fission.

The Natrium reactor delivers superior safety compared to other small modular reactors (SMRs) and is further technologically advanced. It generates 40% less nuclear waste than conventional reactors.

The two companies will combine HD Hyundai’s manufacturing strengths with TerraPower’s technology to establish large-scale production capacity essential for the global rollout of Natrium reactors.

HD Hyundai will create streamlined manufacturing processes to provide essential components for the Natrium reactor.

This will enable the company to lay the manufacturing groundwork required for full-scale commercialisation, extending beyond the initial demonstration project.

HD Hyundai executive vice-chairman Chung Kisun and TerraPower founder and chairman Bill Gates took part in a meeting addressing the fast-tracking of the development and commercialisation of Natrium reactors.

The signing ceremony was attended by HD Hyundai heavy industries marine energy business division head Won Kwang-shik, Bill Gates, TerraPower president and CEO Chris Levesque and other officials.

Won stated: “We expect that HD Hyundai’s extensive experience and advanced technological capabilities in manufacturing will help build the foundation for the commercialisation of Natrium reactors.

“Based on this co-operation, we will accelerate the commercialisation of next-generation nuclear energy solutions and create new growth opportunities in the global SMR market.”

TerraPower focuses on developing advanced nuclear energy solutions that offer safe, reliable and carbon-free power. It is currently constructing the first Natrium plant in the western US.

Chris Levesque stated: “TerraPower is working to rapidly deploy Natrium plants in the US and around the world.

“Through co-operation with HD Hyundai, we expect to expand the supply chain and successfully build Natrium reactors to meet growing energy demand.”

In December 2024, HD Hyundai signed a supply deal with TerraPower for the cylindrical reactor vessel for the first Natrium reactor.
