GreenGo Energy has signed an agreement for the Megaton Moon green hydrogen project in Mauritania, its first venture in Africa.
The agreement, signed by Mohamed Khaled, Minister of Energy and Petroleum, and GreenGo Energy CEO Karsten Nielsen, grants access to more than 100,000 hectares near Nouakchott for the project’s development.
With the agreement in place, GreenGo Energy will now enter the development phase, conducting detailed site and geotechnical surveys, and carrying out meteorological data collection and feasibility studies.
The project will follow a phased approach, aligning with market demand and supply chain readiness from 2029 to 2033.
The Megaton Moon project will eventually include 6GW of electrolysis, 6.8GW of onshore wind and 6.3GWp of solar photovoltaic capackty.
Phase one, expected by the end of 2029, will deploy 500MW of electrolysis, 600MW of onshore wind and 600 megawatts peak of solar PV, producing 339,000t of green ammonia annually.
Mauritania’s advantages for green hydrogen production include exceptional solar and wind resources, coastal access for water desalination and export, and production costs up to 50% lower than in northern Europe.
The country also offers favourable policies and proximity to European demand centres.
GreenGo Energy will finance the project through its partnership model, involving strategic and large-scale investors with a track record in the green energy sector.
The project will be delivered via GreenGo Energy’s 360° full-service platform, showcasing the company’s expertise in executing large-scale renewable energy projects.
Beyond energy production, the Megaton Moon project aims to address water, power and resource shortages, transforming Nouakchott and surrounding areas into hubs of green industrial and urban development.
GreenGo Energy is committed to socioeconomic progress in Mauritania, including a partnership with Zealand Business College in Denmark to develop education and vocational training programmes for the local workforce.
GreenGo Energy CEO Karsten Nielsen stated: “This is a landmark moment for GreenGo Energy and a testament to our commitment to delivering large-scale green hydrogen projects that can reshape communities and economies.
“Mauritania’s unique combination of abundant renewable resources, strategic location, and forward-thinking policies – including the enactment of Africa’s first Green Hydrogen Code – positions it as a leader in the global energy transition. With highly competitive production costs, the country offers a compelling environment for investment. We are honoured to play a role in this journey.”
