Eversource and its partners have broken ground on a transmission initiative, the Greater Cambridge Energy Program (GCEP).
Eversource is an energy provider serving customers in the US states of Connecticut, Massachusetts and New Hampshire.
The initiative aims to meet growing electric demand, improve grid resilience and provide a flexible system to serve customers while supporting electrification and decarbonisation goals.
The project will enhance grid capacity to support clean energy, electrification and technologies such as EVs and heat pumps.
Eversource, BXP, community partners and state and local officials took part in the groundbreaking ceremony of the GCEP project, which includes Eversource’s first underground substation, at 35,000ft².
Located 105ft underground beneath a new green space between Broadway and Binney Street, the substation will be integrated into BXP’s Life Sciences Centre.

By GlobalDataAs part of GCEP, Eversource will build eight new 115kV underground transmission lines across 8.3 miles through Cambridge, Somerville and Boston.
The project also includes upgrading five substations, or clean energy hubs, in Cambridge, Somerville and Allston/Brighton, along with constructing 48 new distribution lines.
Eversource chairman, president and CEO Joe Nolan stated: “Working with our partners at BXP, the Cambridge Redevelopment Authority and the city of Cambridge, the Greater Cambridge Energy Program is a creative solution that helps shape a more sustainable and resilient energy future for our customers in the region.
“By taking a collaborative approach with the community and local leaders, this critical energy infrastructure meets several needs for our customers and the region’s energy supply while helping to enable the clean energy transition.”
As energy demand rises in Cambridge and surrounding areas, the substation will support the electrification of heating systems, meeting 100% of residential heating needs and displacing 50% of commercial gas demand.
BXP’s Boston region executive vice-president Bryan Koop added: “The GCEP is a true example of public and private partnership created to solve a critical community challenge. BXP is incredibly proud and fortunate to partner with Eversource, the CRA, and the city of Cambridge to provide a below-grade space for the substation which will power the future of Cambridge.”
Eversource plans to begin operating GCEP in 2029 with the substation and first transmission line. The remaining lines will be energised by 2031.
In April 2024, Eversource finalised the sale of its 50% stake in the 924MW Sunrise Wind project to Danish offshore wind developer Ørsted.
