GE Hitachi Nuclear Energy (GEH), Global Nuclear Fuel (GNF), Holtec International and SMR Inventec have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to make advancements to the single loop 160MW pressurised light water reactor SMR‐160.
As per MoU terms, SMR Inventec intends to develop, design, commercialise and deploy the improved SMR‐160 on a global scale.
The companies will initially focus on the nuclear fuel development supported by GNF, as well as the control rod drive mechanisms designed by GEH.
GEH president and CEO Jay Wileman said: “With more than half a century of experience and a solid global track record in the nuclear power business, we look forward to providing engineering expertise and technical capability to help advance the development of the SMR-160.
“Our combined strengths allow us to accelerate the commercialisation of this technology.”
GEH and GNF will also carry out assessments, safety analysis benchmarking and identification of recommended experimental tests, which are expected to optimise the SMR-160’s speed to market and help license small modular reactor (SMR) designs with the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission (USNRC) and international regulators.
