Norway’s Equinor and Polish utility Polenergia have engaged a consortium comprising Ramboll and Projmors to provide consultancy services for design work and to secure construction permits for their up-to-1.56GW Baltyk 1 offshore wind farm.

The consortium will undertake the design work for the Baltic 1 project, which is gearing up to participate in a 2025 auction.

Located 81km offshore Poland, Baltic 1 requires comprehensive design work and construction permits, and the consortium will ensure that it reaches ready-to-build status.

Ramboll brings international experience in architecture, engineering and consulting, while Projmors offers specialised knowledge in hydrotechnical design, crucial for offshore wind projects.

To date, the Baltic 1 project has achieved significant regulatory milestones, including permits for offshore cable laying and maintenance, and a grid connection agreement with the transmission system operator.

The electricity generated by the project will be transmitted to the mainland via the Krzemienica substation, currently under development by the Polish Power Grid (PSE).

The onshore cable line for Baltic 1 will be laid in proximity to the designated corridors for the Bałtyk 2 and Bałtyk 3 projects, utilising trenchless technology for a single exit location onshore.

Polenergia CEO Jerzy Zań stated: “Bałtyk 1 is the project for the largest wind farm in the Polish part of the Baltic Sea. Its implementation means doubling our offshore generating capacity and supplying another 2 million households with clean, green energy.

“Bałtyk 1 is being prepared to participate in an auction, which should take place in 2025. The size of this project shows the huge potential of the Polish sea for renewable energy.

“It is in the interest of the Polish energy transition energy transition and the Polish economy is to make the most of it.”

Equinor and Polenergia’s Baltic Sea wind farm developments, including Baltic 1, 2, and 3, will have a joint capacity of 3GW – enough to supply green energy to four million households.

The Bałtyk offshore wind farms represent one of the largest infrastructure projects in Polish history, with the first energy from Bałtyk 2 and Bałtyk 3 to be delivered by 2027.

Equinor Poland country manager Michał Jerzy Kołodziejczyk stated: “The signing of contracts with a consortium achieving synergies from global experience and Polish specialisation is an example of the positive impact of offshore wind projects on the economy.

“Maintaining Poland’s offshore development schedule between the first and second phase is key to maintaining continuity in building competence and increasing the competitiveness of the entire industry.

“The Bałtyk 1 project, which would not only be the largest in the Polish part of the Baltic Sea but also the most advanced in the second phase, offers great opportunities. That is why we believe the auction should take place as planned in 2025.”

In August 2024, Equinor and Polenergia obtained construction permits for both offshore and onshore work on the Baltyk wind projects.
