Israel-based renewable energy projects developer Enlight Renewable Energy along with its Serbian partner New Energy Solutions has officially opened its Kovacica windfarm in Serbia.
Equipped with 38 wind turbines, the wind facility can generate over 104MW of clean energy, which will be sufficient to power 68,000 households in the region.
Enlight Renewable Energy chairman Yair Serousi said: “At the time of climate changes, green energy and its even greater implementation and development is something we all have to work more on. We have invested in Serbia in the long-run and are interested in additional projects.”
Additionally, the windfarm will have the capacity to offset approximately 250,000 tonnes of carbon emissions annually. The project was completed with an investment of €189m, according to the company.
The windfarm opening ceremony was attended by the government and company officials.
Serbia Minister of Mining and Energy Aleksandar Antic said: “The Government of the Republic of Serbia has placed implementation of clean energy as one of its priorities in the energy sector, with the objective by next year to produce 27% of electric power from renewable energy sources and add to the network 500MW of wind power. This project proves that we are on the right path.”
The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) supported the construction of the wind farm with a €49m loan.
Erste Group and Erste Bank Serbia, covered by Euler-Hermes ECA served as Other financiers. In 2017, construction on the farm started and was fully connected to the grid after the receipt of privileged producer status in July 2019.
