Energy Vault has disclosed plans for a 57MW/114MWh battery energy storage system (BESS), named Cross Trails BESS, in Scurry County of Texas, US.

Construction is set to start in the first quarter (Q1) of 2025, with commercial operations expected to commence by mid-2025.

Energy Vault will build, own, and operate Cross Trails BESS, incorporating its X-Vault integration platform, UL9540-certified B-VAULT product, and VaultOS energy management system.

The system’s architecture offers options for battery and inverter suppliers and can accommodate both AC-coupled and DC-coupled configurations.

According to Energy Vault, this project will bolster renewable energy production and enhance grid resilience within the Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) region.

Additionally, the company has signed a ten-year offtake agreement with Gridmatic, an AI-enabled power marketer.

The agreement, which is expected to start in Q2 2025, represents the “first physically settled revenue floor contract” for a BESS in the ERCOT market, the company noted.

The deal is supported by Gridmatic’s Energy Storage Fund and will offer both Energy Vault and Gridmatic the advantage of Gridmatic’s AI-driven forecasts.

Gridmatic has contracted to operate more than 300MW of BESS projects across the ERCOT and California Independent System Operator markets.

Energy Vault chair and CEO Robert Piconi said: “Owning energy storage infrastructure plays a critical role in our commitment to deliver long-term, sustainable shareholder value while allowing the company to more profitably and efficiently capitalise on the growing global demand for energy storage solutions.

“We are excited to partner with Gridmatic as a leading power marketer with proven storage offtake and optimisation performance to hedge project cash flows and deliver reliable, safe and sustainable energy solutions that will benefit the ERCOT market.”

Last month, Energy Vault signed an agreement with the Enervest Group to deploy a 1GWh BESS at the Stoney Creek site in New South Wales, Australia.
