The largest electricity grid in the US, managed by PJM (Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Maryland) Interconnection, is set to see a significant increase in electricity demand driven by the AI boom.

By 2035, peak summer demand is expected to rise by 58GW, reaching 210GW – equivalent to adding two New England networks, as reported by Bloomberg.

Power consumption in the PJM region and across the US is anticipated to grow rapidly as data centres, essential for AI operations, expand in size and number.

The facilities are expected to consume energy on a scale comparable to entire cities, potentially straining the current US electric infrastructure.

At the World Economic Forum in Davos in January 2025, new US President Donald Trump highlighted the need for power plants to be built alongside data centres to mitigate grid stress.

He emphasised the importance of bypassing delays and reliability challenges posed by the existing grid.

President Trump has issued an executive order suspending funding under the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA), impacting clean energy and manufacturing projects.

The move, termed Terminating the Green New Deal, halts funding for the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act as well.

The White House clarified that the IRA pause mainly affects programmes discouraging fossil fuel development or promoting electric vehicles.

NextEra Energy has partnered with GE Vernova to develop natural gas-fired power generation projects in a bid to supply electricity to AI data centres and other significant power consumers in the US.

The collaboration reflects the rising need for natural gas-fired electricity from Big Tech’s data centres, as uncertainty surrounds federal support for renewable energy under the new administration.

NextEra and GE Vernova aim to begin power generation projects by 2029 that will mix natural gas plants with renewable energy sources such as solar and battery storage.
