The Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) has awarded contracts worth AED1.28bn ($348m) to build four 400/132kV substations to increase the capacity and efficiency of its electricity and transmission networks.
The substations will be added to DEWA’s existing 21 400/132kV substations.
The projects include the AED314m ($85m) contract to Grid Solution for the construction of the Canal Garden Station to meet expected demand growth from new projects, as well as reducing the load on the Gardens and Al Barsha.
The Canal Garden Station is scheduled to be completed by February 2020.
The second contract worth AED323m ($87.9m) was awarded to Siemens to build the Dubai South station substation to meet growing load demand.
To be built within the Dubai World Central project, the new substation is scheduled to be complete by March 2020.

The AED304m ($82.7m) Dubai North station construction contract was awarded to Al Fanar Company to meet the growing load demand for new substations, which are being built to expand the infrastructure in and around Dubai Airport.
Construction of the station is expected to be completed by January 2021.
ABB has secured the AED338m ($92m) contract to build the Shams station in order to meet growing load demand resulting from the planned expansion of the 1,500MW power production capacity using PV panels at the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar park.
Work under the contract is expected to be completed by December 2020.
Al Tayer further noted: “DEWA’s initiatives and projects aim to strengthen its competitive position globally, especially in renewable and clean energy, sustainability, and green economy.
“There are currently 243 132/11kV substations, and 15 inaugurated in 2017, with nine inaugurated since the beginning of 2018. DEWA is currently working to build 112 stations over the next few years at a total value of AED10bn ($2.7bn).”
As part of its strategy, DEWA is planning to invest AED81bn ($22bn) over the next five years to meet the energy needs of the Emirate.
