Energy company Constellation has been awarded contracts worth more than $1bn by the US General Services Administration (GSA) to supply power from nuclear energy and other sources and execute energy-saving initiatives across multiple government agencies.

This includes a ten-year, $840m contract to provide one million megawatt-hours of energy annually from 2025.

Constellation will supply energy to 13 government agencies, including the Architect of the Capitol, the GSA, the Social Security Administration and the Department of Veterans’ Affairs.

It will also supply energy to the National Archives and Records Administration, the Federal Bureau of Prisons, the Federal Reserve System, the National Park Service, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, and the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority.

The energy will be provided to locations owned or operated by these agencies in five states, including Illinois and Maryland.

GSA Administrator Robin Carnahan stated: “This historic procurement locks in a cost-competitive, reliable supply of nuclear energy over a ten-year period, accelerating progress toward a carbon-free energy future while protecting taxpayers against future price hikes.

“We’re demonstrating how the federal government can join major corporate clean energy buyers in spurring new nuclear energy capacity and ensuring a reliable, affordable supply of clean energy for everyone.”

A portion of the supplied energy will be generated through investments made by Constellation to enhance plant output – a process known as “uprates.” This initiative is part of a broader strategy to meet the increasing energy demands of government facilities.

Constellation president and CEO Joe Dominguez stated: “This agreement is another powerful example of how things have changed. Under this agreement, the United States government joins Microsoft and other entities to support continued investment in reliable nuclear energy that will allow Constellation to relicense and extend the lives of these critical assets.

“In combination with the Crane restart announced previously, Constellation and its partners will add approximately 1,100MW of 24/7 clean energy by 2028, enough energy to power over one million homes.”

In addition to the power supply, Constellation has secured a $172m energy savings performance contract for energy conservation measures at five GSA-owned facilities in the National Capital Region. The measures include LED lighting upgrades and the installation of new heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems.

The energy-saving project will involve upgrades such as converting four buildings in Washington DC from steam to electric power, installing electric boilers and heat pumps to meet heating requirements.

The construction for the project begins in January 2025 and will take 42 months. Constellation will also provide preventive maintenance and training to GSA personnel to optimise energy efficiency and cost-saving measures in the newly renovated facilities.
