Cavendish Nuclear has secured a contract to design and build a liquid waste treatment plant, which will be used to treat the liquid wastes released during the decommissioning of the Hinkley Point A nuclear power plant.
The company will supply the plant to Magnox, which works with the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority. It is responsible for the safe and secure clean-up of 12 nuclear sites and operation of one hydro-electric plant.
The modular plant provided by Cavendish Nuclear will be designed to be able to process different waste streams and convert them to a form that can be stored or disposed of safely.
It will feature de-watering facilities to create two waste streams. One waste stream includes a sludge that can be mixed with cement to create solid intermediate-level waste. The other will be an effluent that can be treated further by existing on-site facilities, before being discharged to the sea.
Cavendish Nuclear will construct and commission the plant at its facility in Whetstone, Leicestershire. It is expected to be installed at Hinkley Point A by early 2020.
