Canada’s minister of natural resources Amarjeet Sohi has announced funding for the construction of a solar farm in Suffield, Alberta.

The Suffield Solar Project will create 23MW of generating capacity and demonstrate the potential of two-sided solar panels. It captures energy on both sides of the panels by tracking the sun’s trajectory to generate as much energy as possible, increasing energy efficiency by 10 to 15%. When completed, it will generate enough energy to power 7,400 households.

The solar farm will be funded by the Natural Resources Canada’s Emerging Renewable Power Program, which has contributed CAD$15.3 million over two years of the programme’s CAD$200 million budget.

The project will be developed and owned by Canadian Solar and Suffield Solar LP and employ 250 people during construction.

The project forms part of the Canadian government’s CAD$180 billion Investment in Canada infrastructure plan, which includes CAD$26.9 million in funding for green infrastructure projects.
