The US Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) is set to begin an environmental review for a proposed 880MW commercial-scale wind project offshore from New York.
BOEM issued a notice of intent (NOI) to prepare an environmental impact statement (EIS) for the project’s construction and operations plan (COP).

The COP was submitted by Sunrise Wind, a joint venture between Orsted North America and Eversource Investment.
The NOI will open a 30-day public consultation period, during which BOEM will aim to determine the scope of the key resources and issues, environmental impacts, alternatives and mitigation measures to be analysed in the EIS.
Once the review is completed, BOEM will carry out a full environmental analysis as part of the EIS. The analysis’ outcome will determine whether the project is approved.
If approved, the project will cover almost 31 miles east of Montauk, New York, 19 miles south of Martha’s Vineyard, Massachusetts, and 17 miles from Block Island, Rhode Island in the federal waters.

By GlobalDataIt would feature 122 wind turbines, which will have the capacity to generate between 880MW and 1,300MW of clean energy and power almost 600,000 homes.
The project would also help New York meet its target of generating 70% of its electricity from renewable energy sources by 2030.
US Secretary of the Interior Deb Haaland said: “The Interior Department is committed to confronting climate change, creating thousands of good-paying jobs and paving the way for the nation’s transition to a cleaner energy future.
“Offshore wind is a critical component of that ambitious agenda [and] the demand for offshore wind energy has never been greater.
“We will continue to invest in the infrastructure to develop the offshore wind industry and to help attract the domestic supply chain.”
Last month, BOEM announced plans to prepare an environmental impact study for Avangrid Renewables’ Kitty Hawk North offshore wind project in North Carolina.
