Iberdrola Group subsidiary Avangrid has commenced commercial operations of its True North solar project in the US state of Texas.

The 238 megawatts alternating current (MWac) (321 megawatts direct current) facility is expected to enhance grid reliability while playing a significant role in powering US data centres.

As well as delivering green electricity to the Texas grid, the solar facility also supplies clean energy to Meta, including to the company’s upcoming data centre in Temple – its second facility in the state.

Featuring 488,000 solar panels, True North will generate enough energy to power 60,000 homes annually.

During construction, the facility created 300 local jobs in central Texas.

The $369m investment in True North is projected to contribute $40m in property taxes over the facility’s lifetime.

The project also ensures several permanent, full-time jobs for ongoing operations.

True North’s construction also supported the growth of US manufacturing, with components sourced from regional suppliers.

Avangrid partnered with New Mexico-based Array Technologies to procure solar trackers for the facility.

The company also worked with Black & Veatch, an engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) company, to design and construct the solar project.

Avangrid has been operating in Texas for more than 15 years. With the addition of True North, the company now has seven projects in the state, with a combined installed capacity close to 1.6GW.

Avangrid CEO Pedro Azagra stated: “True North is a milestone project for Avangrid and we are proud to see it generating electricity for the Texas grid.

“With a projected boom in data centre construction over the next several years that will significantly increase energy demand, projects like True North are and will be vital to ensuring the resiliency and reliability of the Texas electrical grid.

“Furthermore, these facilities represent new sources of locally produced power that will support the state’s growing economy for decades to come.”

In March 2025, Avangrid announced plans to invest $20bn in US grid infrastructure by 2030.
