United Arab Emirates-based renewable energy developer AMEA Power has secured two battery energy storage system (BESS) projects in South Africa.
The Gainfar and Boitekong projects, each with more than 300MW of capacity, will provide essential power and ancillary services to the national grid.
Located in the North West Province, the Gainfar and Boitekong projects were awarded in Bid Window 2 of the Battery Energy Storage Independent Power Producer Procurement Programme, organised by South Africa’s Department of Electricity and Energy.
These projects will each have a capacity of more than 300 megawatt-hours and are a response to the frequent blackouts and load shedding that challenge the country.
The Gainfar project will be connected to the Ngwedi substation, while the Boitekong project will be connected to the Marang substation.
Both projects are set to deliver essential power, energy and ancillary services to Eskom, South Africa’s public electricity utility, through 15-year power purchase agreements.
