Aker Solutions and ABB have received a contract to provide front-end engineering and design (FEED) services for the GreenVolt project, a significant offshore wind project offshore Scotland, UK.
As part of the first phase of FEED, Aker Solutions will lead the design of the high-voltage offshore substation, overall system design and onshore high-voltage equipment.
This includes the engineering design of the electrical infrastructure, the integration of renewable energy sources from the floating wind farm supplying power to oil and gas assets and to the UK mainland, the design of a large jacket substructure, and the planning of the transport and installation of the substation.
Aker Solutions will deliver offshore substations to drive innovation, standardisation and efficiency in this groundbreaking initiative.
The company’s presence in the UK, with offices in London and Aberdeen, will be crucial for local engagement and ensuring effective support for the project.
The delivery will provide work across Aker Solutions locations in Fornebu, Mumbai, London and Aberdeen.

By GlobalDataAker Solutions executive vice-president for new energies Henrik Inadomi stated: “Our partnership with ABB to support Vårgrønn and Flotation Energy on Green Volt underscores our dedication to contribute to Europe’s vision for accelerating the deployment of offshore wind.
“This collaboration will also make a significant contribution to our shared commitment to building profitable value chains for the European offshore wind industry.”
GreenVolt is a 560MW offshore wind project being developed by Vårgrønn and Flotation Energy.
GreenVolt will mark the deployment of floating offshore wind at scale to electrify and decarbonise the operations of participating platforms. The project is set to deploy up to 35 floating wind turbines.
The project aims to establish the first commercial-scale floating wind farm in Europe and will contribute to the UK’s ambitions to become a world leader in floating offshore wind.
While the majority of GreenVolt’s renewable electricity will flow to the UK grid, the wind farm will also reduce offshore emissions from the North Sea’s oil and gas industry by facilitating the retirement of existing offshore power generators.
GreenVolt will save one million tonnes of CO₂ each year, making a significant impact on both the UK and Scotland’s net zero targets.
