The 15-year power contract will begin in 2023, after the wind farm becomes operational. Air Liquide will use the energy to power its factories in the Netherlands.

Air Liquide executive vice-president François Jackow said: “This agreement will enable us to provide our customers with solutions contributing to the reduction of CO₂ emissions, in line with our climate objectives.

“In the context of an unprecedented transformation of the energy sector in Europe, Air Liquide is accelerating its commitment to take a leading role in the energy transition by supporting the development of renewable resources to foster a low-carbon economy in Europe.”

The deal represents the first power contract signed by Vattenfall for the Hollandse Kust Zuid wind farm. Lying between 18km and 36km off the Dutch coast, it is said to be the first subsidy free offshore wind farm in the world.

The wind farm will use 140 wind turbines to produce more than 6TWh of green electricity annually. Construction works will begin this year.

A Vattenfall spokesperson said the wind farm supports the company’s ambition to provide all its Dutch customers with entirely Dutch fossil-free electricity by 2030.

Vattenfall Netherlands CEO Martijn Hagens said: “We are delighted that Air Liquide, which has ambitious sustainability targets, will purchase fossil-free electricity from Vattenfall.

“Long-term contracts like these provide us with financial security and enable us to keep investing in wind and solar farms, a cornerstone in our ambition to enable fossil free living within one generation.”
