8 Rivers Capital, a decarbonisation technology and property developer, is partnering with Siemens Energy to develop a zero-emissions turbine that will generate 270MW of electricity from captured carbon dioxide (CO₂).

Since the end of 2023, 8 Rivers and Siemens Energy have embarked on the development of direct-fired super critical CO₂ turbines across a range of applications and fuel types. Siemens Energy has now selected a commercially available generator that will be used alongside the Allam-Fetvedt (AFC) turbine.

“Siemens Energy’s network, industry know-how and access to the full clean energy supply chain will be crucial to our continued efforts to demonstrate the feasibility of these platforms and lay the foundation for their deployment at-scale around the world,” said Damian Beauchamp, president and chief development officer of 8 Rivers.

8 Rivers recently completed a study with a commercial party that assessed the feasibility of a biomass-fuelled AFC negative emissions power system (Biome), resulting in the signing of a memorandum of understanding with the aim of commercial deployment.

According to 8 Rivers, Biome as a power system “allows for the generation of low-cost, reliable, negative emissions power while simultaneously generating large volumes of carbon dioxide removal”.

The company said it will look to benefit from Siemens Energy’s “proven global network and engineering know-how” and Siemens Energy will provide key equipment in generation, services, compression and grid technologies.

Joern Schmuecker, senior vice-president at Siemens Energy’s gas services business area, said: “The carbon-negative power solutions that we are developing with 8 Rivers and additional project partners are creating a very promising approach of generating utility-scale clean energy.”

8 Rivers is headquartered in North Carolina, US, and was founded in 2008. It seeks to invent and commercialise infrastructure-scale technologies that catalyse the energy transition, such as hydrogen, carbon capture and biomass carbon removal.
