Description
The project is being developed by GMR Upper Karnali Hydropower, Nepal Electricity Authority and SJVN Green Energy. GMR Upper Karnali Hydropower and Nepal Electricity Authority are currently owning the project having ownership stake of 73% and 27% respectively.
Upper Karnali is a run-of-river project. The gross head and net head of the project will be 159.26m and 150.11m respectively. The total number of penstocks, pipes or long channels that carry water down from the hydroelectric reservoir to the turbines inside the actual power station, is expected to be 8 in number. The penstock length will be 50m. The penstock diameter will be 4.25m. The project is expected to generate 3,500 GWh of electricity.
The hydro power project consists of 8 turbines, each with 112.5MW nameplate capacity.
Development status
The project construction is expected to commence from 2027. Subsequent to that it will enter into commercial operation by 2031.
Power purchase agreement
Bangladesh Power Development Board and Haryana Power Generation are expected to be the power offtakers from the project.
