Description

The project is developed and owned by Thika Power.

It is a Combined Cycle Internal Combustion Plant (CCICP) power plant. The power plant run on dual-fuel. The primary fuel being used to power the plant is heavy fuel oil. In case of shortage of heavy fuel oil the plant can also run on Distillate Fuel Oil. The fuel is procured from Mombasa.

Development status

The project got commissioned in August 2013.

Power purchase agreement

The power generated from the project is sold to Kenya Power and Lighting under a power purchase agreement for a period of 20 years.

Contractors involved

MAN Energy Solutions and Melec PowerGen were selected to render engineering procurement construction services for the oil fired power project.

Thika Power Plant (Thika Power Plant Phase I) is equipped with MAN Energy Solutions 18V48/60B engines. The phase consists of 5 engines with 18.5MW nameplate capacity.

Thika Power Plant (Thika Power Plant Phase II) is equipped with MAN Energy Solutions MARC®2 steam turbine. The phase consists of 1 steam turbine with 7MW nameplate capacity.
