Description

The project was developed by Kafue Gorge Lower Power Development. The project is co-owned by Sinohydro and ZESCO, with their respective ownership stake of 50% each.

Kafue Gorge Lower is a reservoir based project. The hydro reservoir capacity is 80 million cubic meter. The gross head and net head of the project are 200m and 173.3m respectively. The total number of penstocks, pipes or long channels that carry water down from the hydroelectric reservoir to the turbines inside the actual power station, are 5 in number.

The project consists of 5 generators.

The project construction commenced in 2015 and subsequently entered into commercial operation in 2021.

Power purchase agreement

The power generated from the project is sold to ZESCO under a power purchase agreement from 2021. The contracted capacity is 750MW.

Contractors involved

Sinohydro was selected to render engineering procurement construction services for the hydro power project.

GE Renewable Energy was selected as the turbine supplier for the hydro power project. The project consists of 5 units of Francis turbines, each with 150MW nameplate capacity.
