Toshiba has secured a contract from Spain-based Isolux Corsán to supply equipment for the retrofit and modernization of the Altamira thermal power plant in Mexico.
Under the contract, Toshiba will supply two high-efficiency 165MW steam turbines and related equipment for the Altamira power plant that is located in Tamaulipas state, north-eastern Mexico.
Equipment delivery for the power plant will begin in 2016 and the upgraded project is set to begin commercial operations in 2017.
Mexico’s state-owned electricity utility Comisión Federal de Electricidad (CFE) is the owner of the Altamira power plant. The facility currently has two 158MW steam turbines and generators that were shipped by Toshiba in the early 1970s.
In April 2014, a consortium of Isolux Ingenieria SA, Isolux de Mexico SA de CV and Alstom Mexicana SA de CV was awarded an engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contract by CFE to retrofit and upgrade the plant, including fuel conversion from oil to petroleum coke.
The contract includes designing, engineering, equipment manufacturing and set-up, electromechanical and civil works, as well as rehabilitation and modernisation controls that will extend operating life by 30 additional years.
