Minnesota Power has awarded a contract to Siemens Energy to supply 64 wind turbines for its Bison wind energy center, located near New Salem in North Dakota.

Under the contract, Siemens Energy will supply, install and commission its latest 3MW D3 platform wind turbines for the project. With 11m rotor and 92.5m hub height, the D3 platform wind turbines have an output of 3.2MW.

Siemens Energy will also provide service and maintenance of the turbines for a period of three years. The turbines are set to be installed in mid-June 2014, while commercial operation will begin in December 2014.

Siemens Wind Power CEO Dr Markus Tacke said with the company’s innovative 3MW direct drive turbine it is increasing annual energy output with a larger rotor and a higher tower.

"We greatly value Minnesota Power’s confidence in our technologies and services and are very pleased to partner with them once again as they continue to provide reliable, affordable and sustainable power to their customers," Tacke said.

Siemens Energy will manufacture the blades at its Fort Madison facility in Iowa. The D3 nacelle component will be assembled in Hutchinson, Kansas.

The Bison wind energy center in Oliver and Morton counties in North Dakota includes three phases: Bison 1, Bison 2 and Bison 3.

The 82MW Bison 1 wind energy center, which has 31 turbines, was completed in February 2012. Bison 2 and 3, adjacent to Bison 1. Each consists of 35 turbines and together will supply 210MW of renewable energy. Commissioning of Bison 2 and 3 was completed in December 2012.

According to Minnesota Power, the 205MW Bison 4 addition will increase its Bison wind energy center’s total output to nearly 500MW.

Previously, Siemens Energy supplied all of the wind turbines for the three phases of the Bison wind energy center.
