Power plant operator Vattenfall Generation has awarded a contract to Alstom for two German power plants to enable self-generation of energy.
Under the €5m contract, Alstom will supply and install two 110kV type F35 gas-insulated substations in the Jänschwalde and Schwarze Pumpe lignite power plants in Brandenburg.
The turnkey substations will be delivered, installed and commissioned by the end of this year.
The substations will be delivered in a compact double busbar design. Each of the substations will have more than 15 switchgear panels and will be solely dedicated to the lignite power plants.
Under the German Renewable Energy Act (Erneuerbare Energien Gesetz), power plant operators are charged a fee for consuming energy from the local electricity supply, which helps to operate the plants. This capacity to self-generate energy reduces the need for local electricity supply, and therefore provides significant cost-savings to Vattenfall.
Alstom Grid Germany sales head Axel Kossmann said: "This very compact system ensures high reliability and availability of the grid network. These projects confirm Alstom’s leading position on the market for gas-insulated substations and open up new cost-saving opportunities for our customers."
