The Imperial Irrigation District – BESS is a 30,000kW energy storage project located in El Centro, California, US.
The electro-chemical battery energy storage project uses lithium-ion as its storage technology. The project was announced in 2013 and was commissioned in 2016.
Description
The Imperial Irrigation District – BESS was developed by Coachella Energy Storage Partners. The project is owned by Imperial Irrigation District (100%).
The key application of the project is the storage system allows the utility to balance power, arrest frequency decay, provide spinning reserve, mitigate large fluctuations of energy, increase voltage stability and deliver “black start” power restoration capabilities for the nearby el centro gas generation plant.

Additional information
General Electric (GE) will provide Coachella Energy Storage Partners (CESP) with a 30 MW battery energy storage system as part of CESP’s supply contract with the Imperial Irrigation District (IID). Representing GE’s largest energy storage project to date, the plant will be located in California’s Imperial Valley, approximately 100 miles east of San Diego. The facility will aid grid flexibility and increase reliability on the IID network by providing solar ramping, frequency regulation, power balancing and black start capability for an adjacent gas turbine.
