Description

Kudankulam 2 is a Generation III+ nuclear reactor developed by Atomstroyexport, the main contractor for the project.

The 1,000MW reactor is owned and operated by Nuclear Power Corporation of India. The company has a stake of 100%.

The PWR reactor generates 5,537.43GWh/annum of electricity. It features 163 fuel assemblies in the core of reactor, the place where fission occurs and energy is released. Safety contol rods that are used to control the fission rate in the reactor are 18 in number.

The reactor construction commenced in Jul, 2002 and subsequently entered into commercial operation in Mar, 2017.

Atomenergoproekt was selected as an architect engineer for the reactor. The reactor system was supplied by Atomstroyexport. The reactor vessel has been supplied by Atomstroyexport. The material used for the construction of the vessel is Alloy Steel. The civil works were carried out by Atomstroyexport, Nuclear Power Corporation of India Ltd and Hindustan Construction.
