The top five companies accounted for 14% of patenting activity
Analysis of patenting activity by companies shows that Mitsubishi Heavy Industries filed the most hydrogen patents within the power industry in Q3 2024. The company filed 16 hydrogen-related patents in the quarter, compared with 5 in the previous quarter. It was followed by Siemens Energy with 14 hydrogen patent filings, Korea Electric Power (10 filings), and Hyundai Motor (8 filings) in Q3 2024.
Patenting activity was driven by China with a 22% share of total patent filings
The largest share of hydrogen related patent filings in the power industry in Q3 2024 was in China with 22%, followed by the US (21%) and Japan (9%). The share represented by China was 27% lower than the 49% share it accounted for in Q2 2024.
