The total number of environmental sustainability-related grants dropped by 36% in Q3 2022, according to GlobalData’s whitepaper on Environmental Sustainability in Power – Patenting Activity in Q3 2022.
Notably, the number of environmental sustainability-related patent applications in the power industry was 3,505 in Q3 2022, versus 6,667 in the prior quarter.

Analysis of patenting activity by companies shows that Toyota Motor filed the most environmental sustainability patents within the power industry in Q3 2022. The company filed 342 environmental sustainability-related patents in the quarter, compared with 277 in the previous quarter. It was followed by Contemporary Amperex Technology with 248 environmental sustainability patent filings, Siemens (151 filings), and Samsung SDI (133 filings) in Q3 2022.
The largest share of environmental sustainability-related patent filings in the power industry in Q3 2022 was in China with 66%, followed by the US (51%) and Japan (38%). The share represented by China was 112% lower than the 178% share it accounted for in Q2 2022.
