GE Renewable Energy has completed the installation of the prototype for a 5.3MW onshore wind turbine on its Cypress platform in Wieringermeer, Netherlands.

The company said it is on track to deliver the first Cypress platform turbine by the end of this year.

In the coming months, GE will carry out testing of the turbine to support the process of obtaining the type certificate.

The Cypress platform will match each wind turbine solution to specific site needs to enable lower electricity cost. It was initially announced in September 2017 and will be powered by a two-piece blade design that makes it possible to use larger rotors and site the turbines in various locations.

LM Wind Power engineers worked with GE Renewable Energy and GE Research for the blade design, which allows installation of larger turbines in locations that could not be accessed earlier.

LM Wind Power CEO Duncan Berry said: “The project is truly coming together in a very short and demanding time frame. The technology results from decades of blade making knowledge and experience.”
