UK-based firm Pivot Power is set to work with National Grid to build a 2GW network of grid-scale batteries and rapid electric vehicle (EV) charging stations across the country.

As part of the £1.6bn programme, Pivot Power is planning to develop 45 sites in the country with the installation of grid-scale 50MW batteries at electricity sub-stations, which will be directly connected to the extra-high-voltage transmission system.

The sites have been selected near towns and will feature power rapid EV charging stations, which will be directly linked to the transmission system to offer mass charging.

National Grid Electric Vehicles project director Graeme Cooper said: “This innovative solution will help accelerate adoption by providing a network of rapid charging stations across the country enabling cars to charge quickly, efficiently and as cost-effectively as possible.

“It will also give the system operator more choice and flexibility for managing the demands in the day to day running of the network, and also help mass EV charging.”

Pivot Power intends to have operational batteries at ten sites over the next 18 months.
