Swiss technology company ABB has received an offer from Pepco Holdings to supply gas-insulated switchgear (GIS) systems to help strengthen the electrical network in Washington DC, US.
Pepco is part of the Exelon electric and gas utility company, which serves more than two million people in Washington DC.
ABB will help to innovate the Capital Grid project, with the primary objective was to replace the grid infrastructure, as well as further enhance power transmission capacity in the District of Columbia and Maryland to meet current and future energy demands.
The project focuses on the creation of a network connecting multiple substations through underground transmission lines from the north to the south of the region.
Under the deal, ABB will be responsible for design, supply and installation of 69kV and 230kV GIS for four substations within the network.
ABB Power Grids president Claudio Facchin said: “We are delighted to partner with Pepco once again, to modernise the electrical grid in the US capital with our compact and proven GIS technology.

The upgrade will also provide resilience to the grids in order to withstand and recover from unforeseen events such as severe storms.
ABB’s GIS was designed to control and protect the energy network from power outages and also offer a reliable supply of electricity even in harsh weather conditions.
