Russia’s state atomic energy company Rosatom, India’s Department of Atomic Energy and the Ministry of Science and Technology of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh have agreed to cooperate for implementation of the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) construction project in Bangladesh.
As part of the trilateral cooperation initiative, the officials have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU).

Located on the bank of Padma River at the Rooppur settlement in Pabna district, the Rooppur NPP will feature two power units and will be equipped with Russian-designed Water-Water Energetic Reactors (WWER) with a capacity of 1,200MW each.
The power unit No1 of the Rooppur NPP is scheduled to be commissioned in 2023, while the power unit No2 will be commissioned the following year.
The JSC Atomstroyexport project, part of Rosatom’s engineering division, will be constructing the nuclear power plant in Bangladesh on a turnkey basis.
Under the deal, the work to be carried out will comprise design, production, and supply of equipment, construction, installation, start-up, and commissioning.

By GlobalDataThe memorandum includes a framework that will ensure an interaction between the Russian contractor and Indian and Bangladeshi experts for implementing project works.
Under the arrangement, the three parties have agreed to extend their cooperation with each other in the fields of training, consulting and exchange of experience.
Additionally, the memorandum offers a provision where Indian companies can be involved in construction and installation works as well as supply non-critical category materials and equipment for the NPP project.
Rosatom deputy director-general for international relations Nikolay Spassky said: “Today was a landmark event for both of our countries, and the industry as a whole. We are confident that this is the first step toward the formation of a new, forward-looking cooperation agenda in the region.
“Rosatom is a global company and a world leader in the peaceful uses of nuclear energy. We are open to cooperation in the framework of our projects. The signing of the Memorandum is another illustration of our approach.”
