Fotowatio Renewable Ventures (FRV) Australia, alongside the Canadian infrastructure fund OMERS, has purchased the Axedale project, a combined solar and battery storage facility, from ACEN Australia. The move has bolstered FRV’s position in the Australian market.
The Axedale project, located 20km east of Bendigo, Victoria, has a 140MWac [megawatts alternating current] solar capacity and a 50MW/100 megawatt hours (MWh) battery storage system, capable of providing two hours of operation.
With an estimated annual output of 369,459MWh, the facility will meet the power requirements of 80,000 homes in the state of Victoria.
The Axedale project is close to finalising its permitting process and secured a connection agreement with AusNet and AEMO in December 2022.
FRV Australia currently operates eight plants with a combined capacity of almost 1GW.
FRV Australia is developing the Terang and Gnarwarre battery storage projects in Victoria, with Terang under construction and Gnarwarre in its early stages.
FRV Australia CEO Carlo Frigerio stated: “The acquisition of Axedale underscores our commitment to developing innovative projects that blend renewable energy and storage, key elements for ensuring grid stability and advancing towards a cleaner, more efficient energy system.”
In November 2024, FRV Australia and OMERS announced the start of operations at the 353MW Walla Walla solar power plant in the Riverina region of New South Wales.
In August 2023, FRV Australia and Genesis Energy’s joint venture secured land for three new solar farms on New Zealand’s North Island.
With a total power generation capacity of 400MW, the three solar facilities cover a total land area of 740 hectares.
