Alpha Generation (AlphaGen) plans to supply an additional 450MW of electric generation to four existing power stations in the US states of Maryland, New Jersey and Ohio.

The initiative, part of PJM (Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Maryland)’s Reliability Resource Initiative (RRI), aims to address the growing demand for power driven by electrification and industrial needs.

AlphaGen, a strategic partnership owned by an affiliate of ArcLight Capital Partners, is responding to PJM’s call for high-reliability projects.

AlphaGen CEO Curt Morgan stated: “We submitted these proposals in response to increasing demand, the need for reliable, dispatchable electric generation to support economic growth, and with an expectation that competitive market prices will continue to signal that private investment is desirable.

“Experienced, existing competitive power providers like AlphaGen are well positioned to help meet the demand for new power generation given the significant resources, time and capital that is needed to do so.”

Recent PJM capacity market pricing indicates a need for increased power generation.

This demand is attributed to electrification, onshoring of manufacturing and the expansion of data centres.

The proposed projects include an increase of 300MW in New Jersey, enough to power 250,000 homes. This will be achieved through enhancements at two natural gas-fuelled units.

Additional upgrades are planned for facilities in Maryland and Ohio, all managed by AlphaGen, to improve efficiency and operational flexibility.

Morgan added: “AlphaGen’s projects are expected to score highly against PJM’s stated RRI criteria and bring power and capacity to the states where it is most needed. We believe these investments by a competitive generator will be a welcome sight for a market in need of additional power generation.”

AlphaGen was formed in January 2024 to oversee ArcLight’s power infrastructure portfolio in the US.

The company manages a portfolio that generates $2bn in annual revenue. AlphaGen will handle strategic, commercial and operational activities for ArcLight’s power infrastructure assets.
