Pembina Pipeline has announced its investment in a proposed gas-fired combined cycle power generation facility of up to 1,800 MW, and Kineticor Asset Management has announced a joint venture to develop the Greenlight Electricity Centre project (GLEC), focusing on a gas-fired power generation facility with carbon capture options.
The project, located in Alberta’s industrial heartland, includes a potential 1,800MW data centre complex, aligning with Alberta’s data centre investment goals.
Managed by Kineticor, GLEC is a multi-phased, gas-fired combined cycle power generation facility to be developed in modular phases of 450MW each.
The phased development approach will allow it to scale with market demand.
Kineticor CEO Andrew Plaunt stated: “We are thrilled to partner with Pembina on this transformative project. Alberta’s industrial heartland is one of the best locations in the province to facilitate a project of this magnitude given the large land base, robust grid infrastructure and potential for decarbonisation solutions over time.
“By partnering with Pembina, we can leverage and combine our individual strengths and experience in major infrastructure projects to bring all the pieces together to develop a world-class facility.”
The facility will also feature carbon capture options and significant land holdings for a co-located data centre complex.
GLEC is strategically positioned on land zoned for heavy industrial use, near transmission lines, utility infrastructure and carbon sequestration and fibre.
It will support the province’s growing electricity needs driven by the expanding data centre industry.
Pembina senior vice-president and corporate development officer Stu Taylor stated: “We are excited to be partnering with Kineticor and for the opportunity to further extend our value chain to provide power to a promising new Alberta-based data centre industry.
“In addition to our direct investment in Greenlight, Pembina is well positioned to leverage its existing and future asset base to further support the project. The proximity of our Alliance Pipeline offers a potential opportunity to provide natural gas supply to the GLEC, and the potential future development of the Alberta carbon grid may provide a future emissions reduction solution.”
The project is currently in Stage 3 of the Alberta electric system operator interconnection process and is progressing through permitting, design, and contracting.
GLEC has the flexibility to supply power directly to a co-located data centre or feed into Alberta’s power grid, supporting data centre loads across the province.
The joint venture aims to support Alberta’s target of attracting C$100bn ($69.5bn) in data centre investments by 2030.
