Toronto, Canada-based Cordelio Power is expanding its battery energy storage system (BESS) programme by procuring 1 gigawatt-hour (GWh) of equipment and new projects.

In partnership with Fluence Energy, Cordelio will execute two rounds of procurement for the BESS equipment to enable the launch of new BESS projects from its development pipeline, set for construction between 2026 and 2027.

Cordelio has secured offtake agreements for two additional BESS facilities in the western US through its 50/50 joint venture with BrightNight.

The Greenwater project, with a capacity of 200MW and 800 megawatt hours (MWh), has contracted with Puget Sound Energy, while the Pioneer project, which has 300MW and 1,200MWh capacity, has contracted with Arizona Public Service.

Cordelio has brought the McHenry BESS project, a standalone energy storage facility, into commercial operations with a capacity of 20MW and 40MWh. The project is located in McHenry County, Illinois.

Cordelio CEO John Carson stated: “Our BESS programme has hit full stride with these new contracts, procurements and the achievement of commercial operations at our McHenry project.

“We project strong, profitable growth in this sector as we build out Cordelio’s 5.5GW BESS development pipeline.”

Cordelio procurement director Emma Burke stated: “We are pleased to welcome Fluence Energy as a major BESS equipment provider for Cordelio Power.

“This collaboration, along with two other recent BESS procurements, provides strong support for the projects we expect to build over the next three years.”

In October 2024, BrightNight and Cordelio secured a $260m tax-equity financing commitment for the 300MW Box Canyon solar project in Pinal County, Arizona.
