India has reached a milestone by exceeding 100GW in national solar power capacity, strengthening its status in the global renewable energy sector.

The achievement aligns with the nation’s commitment to a sustainable future and its goal of 500GW of non-fossil fuel-based energy by 2030, as outlined by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

New and Renewable Energy union minister Pralhad Joshi stated: “Under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, India’s energy journey over the past ten years has been historic and inspiring. Initiatives like solar panels, solar parks and rooftop solar projects have brought about revolutionary changes.

“As a result, today India has successfully achieved the target of 100GW of solar energy production. In the field of green energy, India is not only becoming self-reliant but is also showing the world a new path”.

The PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana, a scheme launched in 2024 to increase the share of solar rooftop capacity and empower residential households to generate their own electricity, has been instrumental in the surge, nearing 900,000 rooftop solar installations and allowing households nationwide to adopt clean energy solutions.

The solar power sector in India has seen a 3450% increase in capacity from just 2.82GW in 2014 to 100GW by 2025.
