Pele Green Energy (PGE) has reached financial close on the Sonvanger solar photovoltaic (PV) power plant, which will supply clean energy to Glencore Merafe Venture’s operations in South Africa.
The 100MW Sonvanger plant is 4km southwest of Theunissen in the Masilonyana local municipality of Free State province.
As lead sponsor, PGE will deliver sustainable power to Glencore Merafe Ferrochrome smelters.
Glencore Ferroalloys CEO Japie Fullard stated: “We are very excited to announce this development at Glencore Merafe Venture.
“The solar project is in keeping with Glencore’s purpose of responsibly sourcing the commodities that advance everyday life and supports the Venture’s broader climate strategy.”
The project not only strengthens PGE’s role as a top independent power producer (IPP) in South Africa but also marks a first in the country’s energy sector — the initial utility-scale endeavour undertaken by a single sponsor and IPP.

Pele Green Energy CEO Gqi Raoleka said: “Glencore Merafe Venture’s approach with this project has shown a dedicated commitment to addressing the Scope 2 emissions [indirect emissions which are a consequence of the activities of an organisation but occur from sources not owned or controlled by it] from its industrial operations, signifying how sustainable practices are crucial to the future of mining.
“This partnership underscores a shared vision for a low-carbon future. Glencore Merafe Venture’s dedication to reducing its environmental impact and choosing to do so in partnership with a South African IPP demonstrates a joint perspective with our goals at Pele Green Energy.
“We are excited to be part of achieving these critical sustainability milestones for this industry.”
