Sonnedix has launched its 150MW Betierra project in Spain, bringing the company’s total owned and operated renewable energy capacity in the country to above 1GW.
The Betierra project is situated in Castilla-La Mancha, Cuenca, in the central-eastern region.
The project comprises three 50MW solar plants that share interconnection infrastructure – a first for Sonnedix’s portfolio in Spain at this scale.
Betierra is part of a broader 300MW portfolio that Sonnedix acquired from RIC Energy in 2021 during its development stage, with the remaining 150MW currently in the late stages of development.
Sonnedix chief executive Axel Thiemann stated: “With the inauguration of Betierra, we’re proud to be celebrating the landmark achievement of 1GW capacity in Spain.
“This comes a month after we celebrated Sonnedix’s 15th anniversary, a journey that started in Spain. From a 1MW solar plant, we have transformed into a leading solar PV player in the country.

By GlobalData“This portfolio is also our tenth project to reach commercial operation this year alone, reflecting our continued expansion on a global scale.”
The inauguration underscores Sonnedix’s long-term strategy as an owner, developer and operator, focused on acquiring projects with a view to long-term ownership and management.
The renewable energy generated will be provided to Equinix through a ten-year power purchase agreement (PPA) established in May 2023.
Equinix Spain managing director Eulalia Flo said: “The inauguration of this new solar park marks a milestone in our sustainability strategy.
“Through this 150MW PPA, resulting from the agreement between Equinix and Sonnedix, we secure a renewable energy source that exceeds the consumption of our data centres in Spain, which are already covered by 100% renewable energy, and at the same time contribute to the decarbonisation of the Spanish grid.
“For Equinix, this is another positive step in our commitment to achieve climate neutrality by 2030.”
In 2024, Sonnedix commenced construction of the 149MW Douro solar plant in Portugal, its first project in the country.
Located in the Viseu district of northern Portugal, the Douro project will further strengthen the company’s presence in the Portuguese market and the Iberian Peninsula.
