Spain-based BlueFloat Energy has announced that its Gippsland Dawn offshore wind project has secured major project status from the Australian government.

The distinction, shared with only one other offshore wind initiative, paves the way for tailored government support through the Major Projects Facilitation Agency.

The 2.1GW scheme, located offshore Victoria, was awarded a feasibility licence in early 2024.

The Gippsland Dawn project is set to commence construction in 2029, with an estimated capital investment of $10bn and a projected operational start date of 2031.

BlueFloat Energy CEO Carlos Martin stated: “The granting of major project status underscores our commitment to sustainable energy development and highlights our strong track record in developing offshore wind projects globally. We are excited to play a leading role in shaping Australia’s renewable energy landscape.”

The Gippsland Dawn project, to be located between 10km and 33km offshore between Paradise Beach and Ocean Grange, will be among Australia’s largest offshore wind farms with up to 140 turbines.

Its operational lifespan will be above 30 years.

The initiative will create 2,000 jobs during the construction phase and up to 300 ongoing positions in operations and maintenance, fostering new supply chains.

The offshore wind farm will be connected to the grid through a network of cables and substations. The onshore landing point for the transmission cable will align with VicGrid’s connection hub area investigations.

The project’s federal and state approvals are pending.

Gippsland Dawn project director Darragh White stated: “As we move forward, we will ensure that our engagement with the community and stakeholders is transparent and meaningful.

“The success of Gippsland Dawn relies on collaboration and shared benefits for everyone involved.”
