EDF Renewables North America has entered a 20-year power purchase agreement (PPA) with Arizona Public Service (APS) for a 1,000 megawatt hours (MWh) energy storage project in Arizona, US.
The Beehive battery energy storage system (BESS) in Peoria, Maricopa County, will be a stand-alone system with a 250MW capacity for a four-hour duration.
The facility absorbs energy from the power grid during periods of high renewable energy generation and releases it back during peak demand times to support APS’s increasing energy needs.
The system will include lithium-ion battery enclosures, inverters, transformers and a substation. Construction of the Beehive BESS will commence in 2025 and the project will become commercially operational in 2026, delivering a total energy output of 1,000 MWh.
APS Resource Management vice-president Brian Cole stated: “We are incorporating a range of technologies and innovations as part of APS’s balanced energy mix to maintain reliability and affordability on the path to a cleaner energy future for our customers.
“Storage systems, including the Beehive project, give greater flexibility in meeting customer’s energy needs, enabling us to continue integrating variable sources, like solar, into the energy grid.”

By GlobalDataThe project is EDF’s second stand-alone storage facility and underscores its dedication to BESS innovation.
The company delivers integrated energy solutions from grid-scale power to electric vehicle charging, to meet customers’ carbon-reduction goals.
EDF Renewables has so far developed 18GW of wind, solar, and storage projects.
EDF Renewables origination and power marketing senior vice-president Dai Owen stated: “EDF Renewables recognises the essential role of storage technologies for utilities like APS in facilitating the broader deployment of utility-scale renewables
“As a complementary market to our core renewable generation business, storage has become increasingly significant.
“By adding Beehive to APS’s already diverse power supply, it will be better equipped to provide reliable, affordable and cleaner energy to its customers, even in the absence of sunlight.”
In August 2024, Power Sustainable Energy Infrastructure (PSEI), the renewable energy infrastructure investment group of Power Sustainable (PS), acquired a 50% stake in EDF Renewables North America’s Desert Quartzite Solar+Storage project in Riverside County, California.
Desert Quartzite is currently under construction, and will deliver 300MW of solar generation, combined with a 150 MW/4-hour BESS.
