Ocean Winds (OW) and the Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Norte (UFRN) in Brazil have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to enhance the country’s offshore wind energy capabilities.

The collaboration will utilise OW’s significant global experience, including 18.5GW of total capacity, with 2GW under construction and 1.5GW already operational, to bolster Brazil’s offshore wind sector.

Since 2020, OW has registered five offshore wind energy project proposals with a combined capacity of 15GW with the Brazilian Institute of Environment and Renewable Natural Resources (IBAMA).

The proposals cover the states of Piauí, Rio Grande do Norte, Rio de Janeiro and Rio Grande do Sul.

The agreement is set to align critical factors for the industry’s growth, including sustainable regulatory frameworks, local supply chain strategies and community engagement.
